Oh No!! I lost My Dog's Papers!

The registration document or AKC Puppy Application that you received when you bought your puppy are an important part of your puppy's heritage and should be kept in a secure file for your dog or in a safe deposit box at home or elsewhere.  You cannot show, breed or compete your dog in AKC events unless you are in possession of your registration documents!
What do you do if your papers are lost?

First, are the registration documents in your name?  Did you make the required transfer of ownership on the papers after you got home with your puppy?  If you DID complete that important step, call AKC with your registration number and personal information. They will, for a fee, send you a duplicate set of papers.  If you did NOT make the required ownership transfer of registration documents, call your breeder and request their help!  For puppies bred by Buggytown Birddogs, call me at 678-588-1619 and I will help you by requesting duplicate papers for you.

Second, if registration documents have not been completed by you in the case of AKC Puppy Application, or if you have not transferred AKC Registration documents into your name, there is a more difficult problem.  As to my opinion as owner of Buggytown Birddogs, I would advise you to NOT breed your dog if you do not follow the protocols needed to place your puppy into your name.  I will still help you get your duplicate certificates at cost, UNLESS your dog is pregnant or UNLESS your puppies are already born.

Third, if your dog is bred or you have puppies and your female is still in my name, I show up as breeder on your AKC Puppy Application records and I must do the Registration Application for you.  This is NOT a good thing and here are  my reasons for charging you a fee to help you!  When I breed my dogs, I use knowledge I have gained over time to protect those mothers and their babies from parasites, disease and weather.  I cannot control your litter at all and my name should not be a part of your efforts. However careful you are, things can happen. I cannot control the environment the puppies are raised in or the care they receive and I have learned that almost anything can happen, even when a breeder is careful.  Our ability to attract clients and sell puppies is greatly enhanced by reputation and reputation is only built favorably by taking good care of our clients, making right problems that may arise, having clear and concise contracts, using good common sense and delivering healthy pups to our clients when owners arrive to pick them up.  We cannot guarantee what others may do in our name and, therefore, we cannot allow our name to be shown as breeder on your litters.

The costs involved in obtaining duplicate papers for puppies or dogs that are NOT bred are only what AKC charges me to obtain them and cost of mailing to you. These fees will be charged to you. Once paid by you, I will forward papers to you as soon as they arrive at my home. You will still need to transfer the dog or puppy into your name. If papers are lost a second time and those papers are STILL in my name, there will be an added fee of $50 for helping you obtain your paperwork.

The costs involved in obtaining duplicate papers for dogs bred by me and still in my name that ARE bred, or that have pups on the ground, include costs as noted directly above PLUS $500 for my services.  The reasons for this fee are spelled out in the Third paragraph above.

If your dog SIRES a litter, but he is not registered in your name, that means I have to agree that a dog legally owned by me has sired a litter of puppies. For me to agree to your dog siring a litter, it will cost you $100.00.

The bottom line is... we WANT to help you, but your responsibility to your dog is important, especially when it comes to allowing your dog to be bred. Your AKC paperwork is a very important part of your responsibility to your dog and I cannot bear the costs or responsibility of using my name to produce your litters.

Come and see us sometime!  We welcome visitors almost any time!
