Dear Rusty,
When I met you, you were a powerful young dog. You were filled with confidence and you were beautiful. You knew what you were doing and you liked to show off your talent for finding birds, pointing, and retrieving.
You loved everyone. You were a fine figure of a male Brittany, never wanting to fight, never wanting anything except to love people and to hunt. Both of those were your passion.
You produced beautiful and talented puppies, many of which became beloved pets. We hope some are using that inborn talent to hunt too, but you and Mrs. Hazel recreated you again and again!
You were adventurous too, and got lost once. We looked everywhere, and came across a flyer on an ice machine. There you were! Contacted the lady and she asked us, “Does he get excited and run in circles when it is time to eat?” We laughed with her at your antics, thankful that you were okay, and brought you home! From then on we watched you carefully when you were out of your kennel, so that you did not try to cross the highway to “hunt” in the pasture where the geese were!
We knew that you had much to teach us. I turned you out once to show off your wonderful talent, and you ran right to the brush pile where I had planted a bird! I smiled broadly, until you decided to run around the pile two or three times, then jump right in and grab the bird. “Rusty! You forgot to point!” I exclaimed, as you happily brought me back an unhappy, but still living quail. You silly boy! You didn’t forget to point at all. You just taught me an important lesson that day! I know you were, and probably still are, laughing at me about my less than expert handling that day!
We are going to miss you dear friend. There are many fields where you have gone and many birds to point! No more getting old and frail and tired. Now you are free to hunt! We thank you for all you have been to us and for all you have taught us!
You did not ever get to compete and show off your wonderful skills, and for that, we are sorry. But you knew, and we knew, the wonderful friend you were! Rest in peace dear Rusty. You have earned your rest!
